Let me start off by saying that if I had it my way, Cutler would be wearing the predominantly orange until he retires. Despite what he may think right now (or what Josh McDaniel-Sahn may think), Cutler was meant to be a Bronco. He's easily one of the top ten qbs in the league, and has the potential to join himself among the elite. Given a few more years of experience and a chance to master a team's offensive system, there's no doubt that Cutler will be standing with the Mannings and Bradys of this league as a top tier qb.
Led by Cutler, the Broncos had the 2nd ranked offense in the league last season. Cutler, who was playing only his second full year as qb, threw for over 4000 yards and 25 tds in 2008.
Yet despite this, McDaniel-Sahn felt the need to go in another direction. In his failed attempt to bring a safety net with him from New England (some one year fluke named Matt Cassel), McDaniel-Sahn publicly bitch-slapped the most valuable player on his team, and there by started the melodrama that has become the Broncos off season.
Had the Broncos tried to smooth things out with Cutler earlier, things might have worked out between them. Instead it has reached the point where Cutler feels so jilted by the Broncos that he's asking for a trade.
If I thought the Broncos had any chance of repairing their relationship with Cutler, I would be completely against a trade. But at this point, I just don't see that it could happen. And if the Broncos have no other choice but to trade Cutler, there's only one man in the league worth trading him for.
Donovan F. McNabb.
I can already hear the naysayers squawking their disagreement, but what alternative do the Broncos have? Their backup is the spleenless, armless Chris Simms. Do you really think Chris Simms is going to lead your team to the promise land?
Sure the Broncos could draft a qb, especially if they land a pick or two by trading Mr. Cutler, but even if they manage to select an even halfway decent qb, it'll be years before he can perform at a playoff caliber level. Neither the Broncos, nor coach McDaniel-Sahn will have the patience for that. Judging by the numerous, well-aged veterans Mc D brought into town, the goal is to win now, not later. The current Broncos roster wasn't set up for grooming a qb of the future.
If the Broncos don't have Cutler, they'll need someone else who could step in immediately and give them the chance to win. Scanning the league for potential trades or pick-ups, there's just not a lot of options.
The answer to the Broncos problems is McNabb. Sure McNabb is getting old, but he's still got a few productive years left in him. So why not bring McNabb in, and then draft a qb either this year or next to learn under him? McNabb would make the donks a contender right away, and could stick around long enough for them to bridge the gap between the present and the future.
Philadelphia has every reason to make the trade as well. In return for their aging (and often maligned qb), they'll get a young talent who they can build their team around for years to come. It's win/win, baby!
Cutler came into the league as a Bronco, and he should leave it the same, just as McNabb should end his career in Philadelphia, where it started. But if the Broncos can't find a way to make nice with Mr. Cutler, perhaps the swap of unwanted talents could fix everyone's problems.

The Jersey Jinx-
Please forgive me, Broncos Nation, for I have sinned.
I have suspected for some time now that I am the cause of the Broncos post Super Bowl tribulations, but it wasn't until the recent Cutler debacle that I finally accepted the truth.
I am the cause of all we've endured.
It all started with Terrell Davis. Davis, as you may recall, was a bad ass. He was the reason we won back to back championships. He was the reason John Elway finally got to raise the Lombardi trophy. Why wouldn't I own a Terrell Davis jersey?
Shortly after my purchase, Terrell suffered what would ultimately be a career ending injury. Just coincidence, right?
Then how do you explain Shannon Sharpe, my friends? As soon as I bought his jersey he fled to Baltimore to play for the hated ravens. Again, coincidence? Or what about John Mobley. I didn't have his jersey for a month before he suffered a spinal column bruise, there by ending his career forever.
Then there's Javon Walker. I bought his jersey, and he went psycho and ran off to Oakland.
Finally, there's Cutler. Though I didn't buy the jersey myself, I did request one for x-mas. The very next game, while I was wearing said jersey, the Broncos lost to the Chargers 52-21, thus completing the historic collapse that eliminated them from the playoffs. It was because of that loss that Shannahan was fired and Josh McDaniel-Sahn hired to replace him, resulting in a cataclysmic set of events that has eventually brought us to the demise that is the Cutler trade.
Look, I'm sorry. Ok.
I promise, I will never buy another Broncos jersey again. Well, maybe a Chris Simms jersey, if we actually make him the starter.

As an Eagles fan, I would love to see the trade. Cutler has a great career ahead of him. As a Broncos fan, I'm not as thrilled. McNabb is great, but as you said, he probably only has a few good years left. I don't know if the Broncos (with their D) will be good enough to capitalize. We'd definitely be well-entertained though.
ReplyDeleteOverall, it sucks that our new hot-shot coach had to fuck everything up. Cassell?! What was he thinking? I don't blame Cutler for being pissed. I hope they can find a way to smooth things over.
